TBM Transport to Catania – Multimodal logistics operation between Calabria and Sicily
SIMI Srl carried out the complex transport of a TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) destined for a construction site in the province of Catania, through a multi-stage logistics operation involving sea and land phases, specialized equipment, and careful technical planning.
The project began in Reggio Calabria, where the TBM was loaded onto a ferry to cross the Strait of Messina. Disembarkation took place at the port of Tremestieri, from where the first land transport leg began using a 12-axle modular convoy with a gooseneck trailer, to Itala Marina.
At this point, to handle a particularly critical section of the route, characterized by narrow passages, tight curves, and infrastructure with dimensional and load limitations, a transfer was made to self-propelled modular transporters (SPMT) configured with 14 axles. Thanks to the flexibility and precision of maneuver offered by this configuration, it was possible to safely travel approximately 8 kilometers of road, overcoming all difficulties related to the terrain morphology.
The operation concluded with delivery of the TBM directly at the construction site, where the machine was positioned in the operational area with the aid of necessary equipment.
The video documents in detail all phases of the transport, showing the technical and operational approach adopted to successfully complete a high-complexity logistics operation.
